Gardeners Bulls Cross Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Bulls Cross is committed to providing gardening and grounds care services in a way that protects the health, safety and wellbeing of our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public. This policy sets out the principles and responsibilities that guide our daily work on all sites where we provide gardening, landscaping and maintenance services.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our objectives are to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property by planning and managing our work safely and responsibly. We aim to identify and control hazards associated with gardening, landscaping and outdoor maintenance tasks, and to foster a culture in which health and safety is a shared responsibility.
We will review this policy regularly to ensure that it remains relevant to the services we provide and to reflect any changes in our working practices or applicable legislation.
Management Responsibilities
Management at Gardeners Bulls Cross has overall responsibility for health and safety. This includes providing leadership, resources and arrangements that enable safe working practices on every site. Management will:
Ensure that risk assessments are carried out for all significant gardening and maintenance activities, including the use of tools, machinery, vehicles, access equipment and chemicals.
Provide and maintain suitable equipment, tools and machinery in safe working condition, and ensure that defects are reported and rectified promptly.
Provide information, instruction, supervision and training so that employees are competent to perform their tasks safely and understand their responsibilities.
Promote safe systems of work and monitor compliance through regular site checks and discussions with staff.
Investigate accidents, incidents and near-misses, identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee of Gardeners Bulls Cross has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Employees must:
Follow all safety procedures, instructions and site rules provided by the company or by the client where applicable.
Use tools, machinery, vehicles, personal protective equipment and materials only as trained and intended, and report any damage or defects immediately.
Cooperate with management on health and safety matters, including participation in training and risk assessments where required.
Refrain from interfering with or misusing anything provided in the interests of health, safety or welfare.
Report accidents, incidents, near-misses and any hazards observed on site so that they can be assessed and controlled.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before commencing work, suitable and proportionate risk assessments will be carried out for gardening tasks such as grass cutting, hedge trimming, tree work, planting, weed control, use of powered machinery and manual handling activities.
Where risks are identified, we will implement control measures that may include:
Planning work sequences and access routes to avoid unnecessary risks.
Using collective protective measures such as guarding, barriers or signage to protect workers and the public.
Providing and enforcing the correct use of personal protective equipment such as gloves, eye protection, safety footwear, hearing protection and high-visibility clothing.
Limiting exposure to noise, vibration, dust, fumes and chemicals through appropriate selection of tools, work methods and substances.
Adapting work methods to suit weather conditions and ground conditions, particularly when working on slopes, uneven terrain or wet surfaces.
Use of Tools, Machinery and Vehicles
Gardeners Bulls Cross will ensure that all equipment and machinery used for gardening and maintenance is suitable for its intended purpose and maintained in safe condition. Only trained and authorised personnel may operate powered tools, machinery and vehicles.
Pre-use checks will be completed where appropriate, and any faults or suspected defects will be reported and equipment taken out of use until repaired or replaced. Guards and safety devices must never be removed or bypassed. Refuelling and maintenance activities will be carried out in safe areas and in accordance with manufacturer instructions.
Chemical and Pest Control Safety
Where herbicides, pesticides, fertilisers or other chemical products are used, Gardeners Bulls Cross will follow safe handling, storage and application procedures. Only competent staff will apply such substances, using the appropriate protective equipment and observing product instructions and control measures identified in assessments.
Chemicals will be stored securely, clearly labelled and transported safely to and from sites. Measures will be taken to prevent contamination of drains, watercourses, wildlife habitats and neighbouring properties.
Manual Handling and Musculoskeletal Health
Gardening and landscaping tasks often involve lifting, carrying, digging and repetitive movements. Gardeners Bulls Cross will seek to minimise manual handling risks by planning work, using mechanical aids where practical and rotating tasks to reduce strain.
Employees will receive guidance on correct lifting techniques, posture and load management. They are expected to avoid lifting loads that are too heavy or awkward for them to handle safely and to seek assistance when required.
Working With Clients and the Public
Our teams frequently work in gardens, communal areas, commercial grounds and shared outdoor spaces. We recognise our responsibility to protect clients, visitors and the public from harm during our operations.
Work areas will be organised to reduce access by unauthorised persons, using barriers, signage or other measures where appropriate. Tools and materials will be stored safely, and debris will be managed to keep paths, entrances and access routes clear and tidy. Noise, dust and disruption will be kept to a reasonable minimum.
Training, Information and Supervision
Gardeners Bulls Cross will provide appropriate induction and ongoing training on health and safety, including the safe use of equipment, manual handling, use of chemicals, emergency procedures and site-specific hazards.
Supervisors will monitor working practices, provide guidance and correct unsafe behaviour promptly. Safety information and instructions will be communicated clearly so that all staff understand the standards expected of them.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, near-misses and significant incidents must be reported as soon as reasonably practicable. This enables Gardeners Bulls Cross to respond, support anyone affected and identify improvements to prevent recurrence.
Employees must familiarise themselves with emergency arrangements relevant to each site, including assembly points, access routes for emergency services and any specific client procedures. First aid provisions will be made available as appropriate for the size and nature of the work being carried out.
Environmental Considerations
Health, safety and environmental protection are closely linked. Gardeners Bulls Cross aims to carry out gardening services in a way that respects surrounding landscapes, wildlife and local communities. Waste materials will be handled responsibly, and efforts will be made to reduce unnecessary use of water, fuel and chemical products.
Policy Review and Continuous Improvement
This Health and Safety policy is reviewed periodically and whenever there are significant changes to our operations, equipment or applicable legal requirements. Feedback from employees, clients and other stakeholders is welcomed and will be used to improve our arrangements.
By working together in accordance with this policy, Gardeners Bulls Cross seeks to maintain safe and healthy working conditions for everyone involved in or affected by our gardening and grounds care services.
